She and I were bosom buddies. We hung around together all the time,
like two peas in a pod, and with the exception of laundry day were rarely
ever apart. She, being an extrovert, always enjoyed being out in front,
getting all of the attention. (Don’t get me wrong, there was nothing fake
or phony about her - she was just born that way.) I, on the other hand,
shunned the spotlight and was much more comfortable staying out of
sight and under wraps. The last thing I wanted was public exposure.
Years ago, she inherited a generous endowment (courtesy of her
mother’s side of the family) in the form of a large, custom-built chest
containing a perfectly matched pair of priceless family heirlooms; and
therefore became nicely set - for life.
As her biggest supporter, I devoted myself to protecting her ample
assets, as well as smoothing over the little lumps and bumps that
inevitably came her way. You might think mine was a thankless job, but I
relished the supporting role I played in her life because underneath it all,
I knew I was closest to her heart.
Sure, we had our share of ups and downs, and there were times when
she could become a real handful, but overall I’d have to say our
relationship was a very uplifting experience and together, I thought we
made a pretty amazing pair.
