girlfriends from high school, in a lovely home owned by one of the friends, in her old hometown located near the Northern California coast. She and I rolled into town right along with the evening fog, so things were getting a wee bit nippy. Either that or she was just really happy to be there! Now in high school, The Girls had been pretty tight and spent a lot of time just hanging out. But over the course of the last 30 years, various demands and factors of life, including boyfriends, husbands, and especially little children, had taken a real toll on The Girls’ ability to get together, much less hang out anymore like they used to. Still, The Girls managed to remain close via email and phone calls; frequently sharing joys and sorrows, lifting each other’s spirits, and helping to carry one another’s burdens over more than three decades of life’s ups and downs. Their strong bond resulted in an invaluable inner support system that spanned the miles and crossed the years between them…and most likely explains why, at mid-life, The Girls looked and felt almost as perky as they did in high school! The weekend's festivities got off to a titillating start when everyone grabbed their cups and thrust them skyward to toast their good fortune and enduring friendship! Then, after knocking back a couple of big ol' jugs of full-bodied wine, The Girls started feeling tingley all over! So, they whipped up a bunch of juicy tropical blender drinks and took their sweet chi-chi’s out to the hot tub where they bobbled around for hours singing “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing Baby!” and “I’ve Got A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts!” Then someone declared, “IT’S ALL GOOD!” And I had to agree; things appeared to be shaping up quite nicely. But, appearances can be deceiving. (And I should know.) |
